Adrenal Fatigue Symptoms

What happens to our bodies, when we're subjected to low-level stress over a prolonged period of time? In this case, I'm thinking of the targets of narcissistic abuse, many of whom have been subjected to extremely traumatic situations.

One result is excess production of cortisol, sometimes referred to as "the death hormone." This is secreted by your adrenal glands, located on top of your kidneys. These glands also increase their production of DHEA and norepinephrine, in response to physical or emotional pressure. Over time, though, your adrenals will burn out and stop working well.

You may then notice certain symptoms, such as fatigue, headaches, muscle pains, depression, anxiety, lowered immunity and inability to get a good night's rest. You may also have mental fogginess and difficulty concentrating, as you now have a metabolic imbalance.

However, if you visit a regular doctor, you're not likely to be diagnosed with adrenal fatigue. That's because this milder form of a more serious condition, known as adrenal failure, is not widely recognized. In order to get help, you might have to consult with an alternative medical practitioner.

Although I'm not a professional, and can't give medical advice, someone who's been through a traumatic experience should eat nutritious meals and try to get plenty of rest, so their adrenal glands can recover. (Fortunately, you can bounce back from adrenal exhaustion, as these glands can repair themselves if given the right materials.)

The good news is that God, the Divine Physician, has provided us with many herbs and plant-based remedies to gently nudge our bodies into healing.

One popular formula for healing is the herbal treatment for adrenal fatigue formula, developed years ago by an American herbalist named John Raymond Christopher. Many knew him as "Dr. Christopher," because his remedies were legendary. He had great results, because he used carefully selected blends of herbs. Also, he always used whole plants, instead of various laboratory-derived isolates, which are increasingly found in some brands of supplements.

Although Dr. Christopher died in 1983, his life's work is preserved in his herbal blends, still made to his specifications. These herbs are grown without pesticides or they are harvested in their natural state.

Gaia Herbs Adrenal Health

Gaia is another excellent brand and its natural adrenal fatigue supplements contain several adaptogenic herbs, which are special plants noted for their ability to help you withstand physical and emotional assaults. This blend includes rhodiola root, often recommended by alternative physicians to restore adrenal function, as well as ashwagandha, schizandra, wild oats and holy basil (also known as tulsi).

Tulsi is an excellent herb for the adrenals. It is used often in traditional Indian Ayurvedic medicine to address a wide range of complaints, including inflammation, heart problems, respiratory issues, dental problems and infectious diseases, as it gives the immune system a boost.

Many people throughout the world, myself included, drink organic tulsi tea for its health benefits. In addition to being a great overall tonic, this tea is also delicious.

Bach Remedies for Depression

During the height of my run-in with a malicious female narcissist, life became very difficult. There was a great deal of confusion, which is typical when a disordered person decides to make you her target. Also, for "mysterious" reasons, people whom were previously friendly and helpful became cold and standoffish.

Other things started to go wrong as well. This went on for years, before I figured out that a "friend" was behind much of the trouble.

Although I wasn't seriously depressed, I was unsettled, anxious and fearful. Homeopathy was one of the things that greatly helped reset my emotions, in a much healthier direction. Various remedies are often recommended by homeopaths specifically to deal with trauma and abuse.

Unless you know a fair deal about homeopathy, or can work with a professional, it is very difficult to choose the exact right remedy to help you. There are hundreds of remedies, and, in general, only a well-selected one will help.

However, there is a type of homeopathy that uses flower essences, instead of the traditional dilutions. These are very gentle remedies that don't require a professional to choose them. You can do that yourself, by assessing your own emotional state and then addressing it with one of the essences. There are only 38 different flower remedies, so this greatly narrows down the field.

For instance, the Bach Flower Aspen Remedy is designed to help with apprehension and fear, replacing these negative emotions with feelings of security and well being.

Bach medicine was developed in the early part of the 20th century by a physician named Dr. Edward Bach, MD. He became disillusioned with mainstream medicine after being diagnosed with cancer, and given just a short time to live.

After becoming excited about his research, in order to leave a legacy, his malignancies disappeared. He attributing this miraculous recovery to his emotional state. He then spend the rest of his life exploring the connection between negative thought patterns and disease.

The end result was a system of healing with remedies made from flowers. I'm a big fan of these gentle, but powerful, essences that can help bring your body and mind back into balance.

Years ago, during a period of extreme stress, when my grandmother was dying, I relied upon Bach Rescue Remedy to cushion the blow. This is a blend of five essences designed for support during a crisis. It really works.

Herbal Sleep Formulas

One after effect of psychological abuse is insomnia. Many adults, even if they haven't encountered a malicious person, suffer from this problem as well. If you toss and turn at night, it would certainly make sense to try a natural sleep aid, as opposed to a drug-based sleep aid, which can be habit forming.

Also, most natural health experts believe that "sleeping pills" do not provide full restful sleep, so you can wake up feeling groggy. Sleep is very important, because this is when toxins are removed from our bodies.

Nature's Sunshine Nerve Eight contains capsicum, white willow bark, Valerian root, hops, black cohosh and other remedies noted for their ability to calm the nerves. Blends are preferred by most herbalists because the various plants included have a synergy, which makes them much more effective than individual remedies.

This was the brand recommended to me by a naturopathic practitioner, whom I sought out for help when I had severe nerve and muscle inflammation, which flared up following a period of extreme emotions. These products are made by an American-based company started by a husband and wife team back in 1972. These very potent herbs are sold in capsule form, which make them easier to take.

Herbal Sleep Teas

Some people prefer to sip herbal tea that contains plants that function as natural sedatives. This would be another option, if you find yourself tossing and turning. Traditional Medicinals, a leader in the herbal tea market, makes Nighty Night sleep tea, which contains passionflower, chamomile, linden flower, catnip, hops, spearmint, lemon verbena, lemon peel and lemongrass.
